Tinubu’s Recreating Singapore’s Lee Kuan Yew Legacy in Nigeria, Says SGF Akume

Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) George Akume has drawn a striking comparison between President Bola Tinubu’s leadership style and the transformative legacy of Singapore’s founding Prime Minister, Lee Kuan Yew.

Speaking at the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Summit in Abuja, Akume praised Tinubu’s reform-driven governance as visionary and transformative, despite facing criticism over economic challenges.

Highlighting the impactful decisions and strategic reforms undertaken by the Tinubu administration in just two years, Akume emphasized the President’s commitment to national development and structural progress. He noted that this approach mirrors Lee Kuan Yew’s leadership qualities, particularly his foresight, discipline, and tenacity, which turned Singapore from a struggling port city into a global model of prosperity and efficiency.

“Lee Kuan Yew’s governance was built on meritocracy, long-term planning, and strict discipline values that President Tinubu is also bringing to Nigeria.

“This is a leadership style that prioritizes sustainable development and national transformation,” Akume said.

Akume also touched on the growing popularity of the APC, stating that Nigerians are increasingly joining the party not just due to promises, but because of visible results and a renewed sense of purpose under Tinubu’s administration.

He described the APC as a movement of progress and inclusiveness and urged party members to intensify mobilization efforts ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The comparison to Lee Kuan Yew, who led Singapore from 1959 to 1990 and is credited with building one of the world’s most prosperous nations, positions Tinubu’s leadership as a visionary project aimed at fundamentally reshaping Nigeria’s trajectory.

As Nigeria navigates economic reforms and national development goals, Akume’s remarks highlight the aspirations of the Tinubu administration to emulate successful models of governance and create lasting change.
