Nnamdi Kanu Admitted Inciting Public to Attack Police, DSS Witness Tells Court

A key witness from the Department of State Services (DSS) has told the Federal High Court in Abuja that the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, admitted to inciting members of the public to attack police officers and to operating an unlicensed radio station used for propagating separatist messages.

Testifying in camera due to national security concerns, the witness revealed that Kanu personally acknowledged his voice in various audio recordings where he allegedly called on his followers to take violent actions against security personnel, particularly the police.

“Kanu admitted to operating Radio Biafra without any license and said those broadcasts were made by him,” the witness told the court.

The recordings were tendered as evidence by the prosecution, suggesting that Kanu’s messages directly contributed to unrest and attacks on police formations across the Southeast.

The DSS operative further stated that Kanu is the founder of the Eastern Security Network (ESN), the paramilitary wing of IPOB, which has been linked to several violent incidents in the region.

The prosecution, led by the Federal Government, insisted that these admissions validate the charges of terrorism, treasonable felony, and incitement currently leveled against Kanu, who has been in DSS custody since his controversial rendition from Kenya in 2021.

However, the claims have been fiercely contested by IPOB and Kanu’s family. In separate statements, both parties accused certain media outlets and government operatives of misrepresenting the proceedings. IPOB labeled the court narrative a “fabrication,” stressing that Kanu never called for violence and has always maintained a stance of peaceful agitation for Biafra’s independence.

His family called for transparency, demanding live broadcasts of the court sessions to ensure the public has firsthand access to the proceedings.

“Only then can the lies and media propaganda be exposed,” a spokesperson for the family said.

The trial continues amid growing calls for judicial reform and transparency in high-profile national security cases. The next hearing is expected to feature cross-examination of the DSS witness by Kanu’s defense team.
