Release Detained Ikale Protesters, Human Rights Lawyer Temokun Urges Ondo Attorney-General
Prominent human rights lawyer, Tope Temokun has petitioned the Attorney-General of Ondo State, Kayode Ajulo, demanding the immediate release of several detained members of the Akoko Youth Forum (AYF), who were arrested following a confrontation allegedly involving the Attorney-General himself.
The arrest of the youths, who are of Ikale origin, has sparked a wave of criticism and protests across the state capital, Akure, with many accusing Ajulo of abusing his office to suppress dissent and intimidate young activists.
Temokun, in his letter, described the charges against the protesters as “baseless and politically motivated,” urging the Attorney-General to place priority on pressing security concerns rather than personal vendettas.
“The actions of the Attorney-General betray the very principles of justice and good governance he is sworn to uphold.
“At a time when insecurity is rife and citizens demand better governance, it is disheartening to see state resources being used to clamp down on the voices of concerned youths,” Temokun said.
Public outcry intensified after a group of protesters stormed major streets in Akure demanding the unconditional release of the detained youths.
Placard-carrying demonstrators accused Ajulo of targeting his own kinsmen and called for his resignation.
In a show of solidarity, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) issued a 72-hour ultimatum to the Ondo State Government, threatening nationwide protests if the detained individuals were not released. NANS described the incident as “a gross violation of democratic freedoms.”
In a significant turn of events, a Magistrate Court in Akure dismissed the remand application brought by the Attorney-General’s office, describing it as lacking in merit.
The court subsequently granted bail to the arrested youths, dealing a legal blow to the state’s case.
The incident has highlighted growing tensions between youth activists and state authorities in Ondo State. Civil society groups have urged the government to show restraint and respect for constitutional rights, warning that attempts to silence dissent could erode public trust in the justice system.
As the controversy continues, many are watching closely to see whether Ajulo will heed Temokun’s call and take steps to deescalate the situation.
