EFCC Boss Sounds Alarm Over Rising Cybercrime Among Youths

The head of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission Mr. Ola Olukoyede has warned that the growing trend of young people, especially males, engaging in online scams is having devastating consequences on their lives.

Speaking at an event commemorating the International Day of the Boy Child, the EFCC chief expressed concern over the long-term damage this could cause to their mental wellbeing and future prospects.

According to the commission, the allure of easy money, peer influence, and the thrill of cybercrime are luring many young individuals into this illicit activity. However, the consequences of getting caught are severe, with potential lasting effects on their psychological health, including stress, fear, and long-term emotional trauma.

To combat this issue, the EFCC is launching a specialized research center focused on cybercrime, which aims to provide young people with alternative paths to explore their digital skills and interests in a positive and ethical manner. The commission is urging youths to make wise choices and resist the temptation of shortcuts to success, instead embracing values that lead to genuine achievement and a brighter future.

By offering a platform for innovation, digital education, and moral guidance, the EFCC hopes to divert young people away from the dangers of cybercrime and towards a more constructive and rewarding path. The commission believes that with the right support and opportunities, young individuals can unlock their full potential and build a successful future without resorting to illicit activities.
