SSANU Gives Sokoto Govt 14-day Ultimatum, Threatens Indefinite Strike

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Sokoto State University (SSU) chapter, will resume work on Monday, November 9, after its five-day warning strike, but has issued the Sokoto State Government a fresh 14-working-day ultimatum to resolve outstanding welfare issues.

The union said failure to address its demands by November 27, 2026, would lead to a total and indefinite strike.

SSANU disclosed this in a statement jointly signed by its chapter Chairman, Ismail Muhammed, and Secretary, Mansur Ahmad, on Sunday.

The latest decision followed the expiration of the warning strike, which began on November 2 and ended on November 6.

According to the union, the resumption was intended to demonstrate its commitment to industrial harmony and give the state government additional time to resolve the dispute.

It, however, stressed that returning to work did not amount to withdrawing its demands.

The union said the warning strike became necessary after the government failed to approve and implement the outstanding entitlements despite several engagements, written requests, reminders and meetings with relevant officials.

Among the issues raised by SSANU are the payment of arrears from the 25 per cent salary increase, approval and implementation of the 35 per cent Consolidated Non-Teaching Tools Allowance, and payment of annual salary increments due to eligible members.

The union also demanded the release of outstanding check-off dues owed to it.

SSANU argued that the demands were legitimate and consistent with benefits already granted to workers in comparable categories at Sokoto State University, Shehu Shagari University of Education and other state-owned tertiary institutions.

It called on Governor Ahmed Aliyu to intervene directly by directing the immediate approval and implementation of the outstanding entitlements.

The association also appealed to the Ministry for Higher Education, relevant government agencies, traditional institutions, parents, students and other stakeholders to support efforts to resolve the dispute before the ultimatum expires.

SSANU said it expected the government to provide concrete approvals, clear implementation timelines and full payment of outstanding claims, rather than further assurances or partial measures.

The union warned that failure to meet its demands within the 14-working-day period would leave it with no alternative but to commence a total and indefinite strike.

It reaffirmed its commitment to staff welfare, quality university education and industrial peace, urging the state government to use the fresh ultimatum to settle the dispute and avert another disruption to academic activities.
