Visit Remaining 33 States, Account for Government Resources, Obi Challenges Tinubu

Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Peter Obi, has challenged President Bola Tinubu to visit the remaining 33 states of the federation and use the engagements to explain his administration’s record to Nigerians ahead of the 2027 general election.

Obi made the call in a post on X on Saturday, following Tinubu’s overnight stay in Akwa Ibom State, where the President described the visit as a “second term presidential sleep.”

The former Anambra State governor congratulated Tinubu on spending a night outside Lagos and Abuja, but urged him to extend the practice to other parts of the country and engage directly with citizens.

Obi said such visits should provide an opportunity for the President to account for the resources available to the Federal Government and explain how they had been used.

He specifically demanded an account of funds he said were saved from the removal of fuel subsidy, borrowing undertaken by the administration and increased government revenue from taxation.

He also called for explanations on the effect of government policies on poverty reduction, education, healthcare and electricity supply.

Obi asked the President to provide figures showing how many Nigerians had been lifted out of poverty, the number of out-of-school children returned to classrooms and the number of functional primary healthcare centres established under the administration.

On power supply, he questioned whether there had been significant improvement in electricity availability, recalling Tinubu’s previous promise that Nigerians should not re-elect him if his administration failed to address the country’s power challenges.

The NDC candidate also raised concerns about insecurity, saying Nigerians deserved to know what measures had been implemented to improve national security.

“Mr President, Nigerians deserve answers. They deserve to know what has been done with the resources entrusted to your government,” Obi said.

He said the New Nigeria he advocates would be built around accountability, transparency and demonstrable improvements in the lives of citizens through the use of public resources.

Tinubu had earlier told supporters at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on Friday that he would spend the night in Akwa Ibom, describing it as a “second term presidential sleep” and expressing confidence about his re-election bid in 2027.
