Real Madrid boss José Mourinho has warned his players against celebrating too much after their 2-1 victory over Barcelona at the Camp Nou. He insisted that the club’s real target is winning La Liga, not beating their biggest rivals in a single night.

Kylian Mbappé scored a late winner in the dramatic Clasico and reached 100 goals for Madrid in the process. Speaking after the game, Mourinho said Real Madrid do not play to win at the Camp Nou but to win the league, and that this must be the team’s mentality. He said he would not allow anyone to have their head in the clouds when the squad returned to training.

He added that the result would lose its value if the team slipped up in their next fixture, away to Racing Santander at El Sardinero.

The Portuguese tactician praised his players for the way they handled the occasion. He said Madrid could have won through luck, but instead won with calmness and “with all merit”, adding that everyone in the squad was ready.

He also highlighted the strength of his group and the benefit of mixing different qualities in midfield rather than fielding players with similar profiles.

Goalkeeper Andriy Lunin was a notable figure in the match. He stepped in for Thibaut Courtois, who was ruled out with flu, and Mourinho said his only message to him before kickoff was that a goalkeeper trains to play, not to sit on the bench.

Mourinho also confirmed that captain Federico Valverde picked up an injury early in the game but chose to play on to help his teammates.

The win lifts Madrid three points clear of Barcelona at the top of the table. It also marks a winning return to the fixture for Mourinho, who came back to the Bernabéu this summer, 13 years after his first spell, and now has six wins and six defeats in El Clasico.
