INEC to Prioritize Osun 2026 Governorship Election,Says REC Agboke

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that it will prioritize the Osun 2026 governorship election as part of its ongoing efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s democratic process.

This was disclosed by the Osun State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Dr. Mutiu Agboke, during a strategic meeting with the National Orientation Agency (NOA) in Osogbo on May 13, 2025.

Dr. Agboke emphasized the critical need for robust public sensitization and voter education ahead of the 2026 polls, noting that effective collaboration with key stakeholders like the NOA is essential for a credible and peaceful election.

“Our priority now is the Osun 2026 governorship election. We must reorient the public on the importance of active and informed participation in the electoral proces.

“It is crucial to address misconceptions and rebuild public trust to ensure successful, free, and fair elections,”
Agboke stated.

He highlighted the significant role the NOA has played in past elections, including voter education, mobilization, and advocacy against electoral violence and malpractice.

The REC stressed that early preparations and comprehensive awareness campaigns can significantly reduce incidents of voter apathy, vote buying, and election-related violence.

Dr. Agboke also revealed that the official timetable for the Osun 2026 governorship election is expected to be released by June 2025.

This schedule will outline key milestones, including the commencement of voter registration, party primaries, and final election dates, providing clarity for political parties, candidates, and the electorate.

In his response, the NOA State Director, Stephen Adefarasin Adebiyi, commended INEC for its proactive approach to election planning. He pledged the agency’s continued support in ensuring a well-informed electorate, particularly at the grassroots level.

“We appreciate INEC’s commitment to credible elections. We are prepared to intensify our grassroots mobilization efforts to educate and prepare voters for the 2026 polls.

“Our collaboration has significantly improved the electoral landscape in Osun State, and we will continue to work together to strengthen democracy,” Adebiyi remarked.

Dr. Agboke concluded the meeting by urging both agencies to remain vigilant and proactive, emphasizing the need for impactful advocacy to combat election-related challenges. He called for a renewed commitment to transparency and inclusivity in the electoral process, ensuring that every vote counts in 2026.
