Ukraine Has Run Dry of Patriot Interceptors as Russian Missiles Pound Kyiv Energy Sites, CNN Reports

Ukraine has run out of missiles for its US-made Patriot air defence system, leaving it exposed to Russian ballistic missile attacks, a source familiar with the situation told CNN on Thursday.

The source said almost none of the ballistic missiles in the latest Russian strike, overnight into October 14, were intercepted for lack of interceptors.

Russian missiles hit three power plants in Kyiv and energy infrastructure in Kharkiv, killing four people and injuring 25 in the capital. The Patriot is one of the few systems capable of shooting down ballistic missiles.

It is not the first time Kyiv’s stock has been exhausted. In mid-August, CNN was given rare access to a Patriot site in Ukraine, where officials said the launchers were virtually empty. Around the same time, President Volodymyr Zelensky said he was making “millions” of calls to allies to secure more, and that Ukraine had only about a tenth of the interceptors it urgently needed.

He has since suggested he could soften his position in exchange for additional missiles. A month after the August visit, he said Ukraine would receive a licence to manufacture Patriot missiles from the United States. Zelensky has also warned of an expected increase in attacks on energy infrastructure this winter.

The shortage comes amid a public row between Washington and Kyiv. President Donald Trump has clashed with Zelensky over the targeting of Russian energy facilities, and reports say Trump previously declined to provide Ukraine with 300 interceptors.

On Thursday, Zelensky said Ukraine would not abide by an energy ceasefire. The war involving Iran has also raised concerns about the depletion of US stocks of key munitions. Some stockpiles in Europe are said to be nearing the end of their service life, with Greece and Spain reportedly holding such interceptors but so far refusing to transfer them. Japan is also said to be considering a transfer.

Ukraine is also dealing with restrictions on SpaceX’s Starlink and Starshield services, which are critical to its military communications and drone operations. Zelensky said Russia launched more than 850 attack drones since midnight while Ukraine’s defensive capabilities were being “artificially restricted.”

Ukraine’s top diplomat in Washington, Denys Sienik, said speeds have improved but are not fully restored, and Kyiv says it has received no response from SpaceX or the Pentagon. CNN’s report relies on a single unnamed source, and Ukrainian officials have not publicly confirmed the stockpile is completely empty.
