Tinubu, First Lady, Top Dignitaries Attend Premiere of MKO Abiola Documentary in Lagos
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu joined several prominent government officials and political leaders in Lagos for the national premiere of MKO, a documentary chronicling the life, political struggle and legacy of the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola.
The event was held at the Wole Soyinka Centre for Culture and Creative Arts in Iganmu as part of activities marking Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.
The documentary, produced by filmmaker Ose Oyamendan, explores Abiola’s role in Nigeria’s democratic journey and the events surrounding the June 12, 1993 presidential election.
Among the dignitaries in attendance were Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang, Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq and Chief of Staff to the President Femi Gbajabiamila.
Also present were ministers, members of the National Assembly, former Ogun State Governor Olusegun Osoba and other notable personalities from across the country.
The documentary revisits the annulment of the June 12 election, widely regarded as a defining moment in Nigeria’s democratic history, and highlights the sacrifices made by pro-democracy activists who campaigned for the restoration of civilian rule.
Speaking at the event, participants paid tribute to individuals who played key roles in the struggle for democracy and emphasized the importance of preserving the memories of those who contributed to the nation’s democratic development.
The film had earlier been screened internationally before its Nigerian premiere and is expected to introduce a new generation of Nigerians to the story of MKO Abiola and the June 12 democratic movement.
