British High Commissioner Designate to Nigeria, Pete Vowles, has arrived in Abuja to begin his assignment, pledging to strengthen cooperation and build on the longstanding relationship between Nigeria and the United Kingdom.

Vowles, who succeeds Dr Richard Montgomery CMG, arrived in the Nigerian capital on Monday, the British High Commission said in a statement.

Speaking after his arrival, the envoy said his immediate focus would be to listen, learn and engage with Nigerians across different parts of the country.

Vowles said he was excited to begin his posting and intended to travel across Nigeria, meet people and gain a deeper understanding of the country’s culture and dynamism.

He said the relationship between Nigeria and the UK was founded largely on strong ties between their people and expressed his readiness to work with partners across the country to identify opportunities for further cooperation.

“The UK and Nigeria have a deep and enduring partnership, built above all on the connections between our people,” Vowles said.

He added that he looked forward to discovering Nigeria personally and working with stakeholders to strengthen existing relations and explore areas where both countries could achieve more together.

Vowles brings extensive diplomatic and development experience to the position, having previously served as His Majesty’s Ambassador to Zimbabwe.

He also held senior positions at the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office and previously served as Ambassador to Myanmar.

His diplomatic and development career has included assignments in several African and Asian countries, including Bangladesh, India, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Kenya.

The UK Government announced his appointment as the next British High Commissioner to Nigeria on June 16, 2026.

His arrival comes amid continued engagement between Nigeria and the UK across diplomatic, economic, security and people-to-people relations.
