President Bola Tinubu has approved the allocation of a property recovered by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to the Nigeria Data Protection Commission as its new headquarters in Abuja.

The Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, disclosed this on Monday during the commissioning of the facility.

Tijani said the decision followed concerns over the NDPC’s need for a suitable permanent office as its responsibilities and operations continued to expand.

He explained that the President directed that the recovered property be put to productive public use, allowing the asset to support the operations of an agency responsible for protecting Nigerians’ personal data.

The NDPC’s National Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer, Vincent Olatunji, said the commission obtained approval to use the property in July 2025, while renovation work commenced in March 2026.

Olatunji said the commission, which began operations in 2022 with about 12 employees and limited funding, had since expanded its activities considerably.

He disclosed that the NDPC had licensed 356 Data Protection Compliance Organisations, contributing to more than 27,000 jobs, while the commission had generated over ₦12 billion in revenue within three years.

The commissioner also said more than 66,000 Nigerians had enrolled in the commission’s virtual privacy academy, while its training programmes had reached nearly 100,000 participants.

Tijani said the growing use of digital services and artificial intelligence had made data protection, privacy and responsible technology use increasingly important to Nigeria’s digital economy.
