Archbishop Kawas Denies Receiving Funds From Peter Obi, Defends Support for Tinubu

Archbishop Leonard Bouwe Kawas has dismissed claims that he received financial support from presidential candidate, Peter Obi, insisting that his political views and public endorsements were not influenced by monetary considerations.

The cleric stated that Peter Obi never gave him “one dollar or one naira,” stressing that he independently financed his activities and has never collected money from the former Anambra State governor.

Kawas also defended his support for President Bola Tinubu, arguing that individuals should be free to express their political preferences without facing intimidation or public attacks.

Addressing criticism over his role in national politics, he rejected attempts to label him a “fake bishop,” maintaining that he is a legitimate religious leader and has no reason to conceal his identity or affiliations.

The cleric said public debates should focus on issues and policies rather than personal attacks, adding that political differences should not be used to question an individual’s integrity or religious standing.

His remarks come amid renewed political discussions ahead of the 2027 general elections, with endorsements and alignments by prominent religious and political figures continuing to attract public attention.
