Boko Haram Insurgents Storm Military Base, Capture Arms, Soldiers
In a brazen and coordinated attack, suspected Boko Haram terrorists stormed an army base in Marte, Borno State, capturing an undisclosed number of soldiers and leaving a trail of destruction in their wake.
According to eyewitnesses and military sources, the attack occurred in the early hours of the morning, when the terrorists, armed with heavy weaponry and explosives, descended upon the base, catching the soldiers off guard.
The terrorists, who were reportedly dressed in military fatigues, launched a fierce assault on the base, engaging the soldiers in a intense firefight that lasted for several hours.
Despite being outnumbered, the soldiers put up a valiant resistance, but were ultimately overwhelmed by the sheer force of the attack.
“It was a surprise attack. The terrorists came in large numbers and were well-armed. They took us by surprise, and before we could regroup and respond, they had already gained control of the base,” said a military source, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
The source confirmed that several soldiers were captured by the terrorists, but declined to provide further details, citing the sensitivity of the situation.
The attack is the latest in a series of brazen assaults by Boko Haram on military bases and personnel in the region.
The terrorist group has been waging a decade-long insurgency in northeast Nigeria, seeking to establish an Islamic caliphate in the region.
The Nigerian military has been struggling to contain the group, despite repeated claims of successes and victories.
The attack on the Marte base is a significant blow to the military’s efforts to secure the region and protect civilians from the terrorist group’s attacks.
The Nigerian Army has issued a statement confirming the attack, but declined to provide further details, citing ongoing operations to rescue the captured soldiers and secure the base.
“We are aware of the attack on our base in Marte, and we are taking all necessary measures to rescue our personnel and secure the area.
“We will provide further updates as more information becomes available,” said a spokesperson for the Nigerian Army.
The attack has raised concerns about the safety and security of military personnel and civilians in the region, and has sparked fears of a resurgence of Boko Haram’s activities in the area.
The Nigerian government has been under pressure to do more to address the security challenges in the northeast, and the attack on the Marte base is likely to increase calls for greater action to be taken against the terrorist group.
