The African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, is scheduled to leave Nigeria for the United States and Canada as part of a North American tour ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The tour will take Sowore to Washington, D.C., among other locations, where he is expected to engage Nigerians living abroad, political supporters, activists and other stakeholders as the party intensifies preparations for the election.

His trip will also give him an opportunity to spend time with his immediate family after a prolonged period in Nigeria.

Sowore has in recent months been involved in several arrests, detentions and legal proceedings arising from his political activities and public statements. The cases have involved the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services (DSS).

In the latest development, the DSS announced that its prosecutors had been instructed to suspend the cybercrime proceedings against Sowore over his description of President Bola Tinubu as a criminal.

The decision followed months of court proceedings involving Sowore and his legal representatives.

During his time in the United States and Canada, Sowore is expected to hold meetings with members of the Nigerian diaspora and participate in engagements with supporters and activists.

He is expected to return to Nigeria before the end of September to continue his campaign activities ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

The AAC said Sowore’s temporary absence would not disrupt its campaign, as the #Sowore2027 movement would continue its activities across the country.

The party added that Sowore would participate in some campaign engagements virtually while abroad and meet with Nigerians in the diaspora in different parts of the United States and Canada.

The AAC said its campaign would remain focused on what it described as revolutionary transformation, equal rights and justice, rather than maintaining the existing political order.
