You Are Betrayer, Have Lost Control of Kwankwassiya Movement, NNPP Drags Kwankwaso over Defections
The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has publicly lashed out at its former presidential candidate and political figurehead, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, accusing him of betrayal and declaring that he no longer controls the influential Kwankwassiya movement.
In a strongly worded statement released on Monday, the NNPP’s National Publicity Secretary described Kwankwaso’s recent political maneuvers as “a gross betrayal of the party’s trust and a clear sign of self-interest overriding the collective vision.”
“Kwankwaso’s actions in recent times show that he is no longer guided by the ideals of loyalty, discipline, and progressive leadership.
“He has abandoned the principles upon which the NNPP was founded and has consequently lost control of the Kwankwassiya movement,” the statement read.
Sources within the NNPP revealed that the rift had been growing steadily since the 2023 general elections, where Kwankwaso ran as the party’s presidential candidate.
Party insiders allege that he sidelined the NNPP’s structure and grassroots contributors in favor of personal political aspirations.
The recent development follows growing speculation that Kwankwaso is exploring political realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections — a move viewed by party stakeholders as a betrayal of the collective struggle that led to the NNPP’s rise as a formidable opposition force.
Once the unchallenged leader of the Kwankwassiya movement — known for its iconic red caps and strong youth following in Northern Nigeria — Kwankwaso is now reportedly losing grip on the very platform that propelled him into national prominence.
“The truth is, many key figures in the Kwankwassiya movement no longer align with Kwankwaso’s current direction.
“He has drifted from the people and the purpose.”
Party leaders said several top Kwankwassiya loyalists have withdrawn their support, citing growing disillusionment with Kwankwaso’s alleged backroom dealings and increasing proximity to political rivals he once opposed,” the NNPP noted.
Though Kwankwaso has yet to issue a formal response to the NNPP’s accusations, political observers say his next steps will be crucial in determining his continued relevance in Nigerian politics.
Once hailed as a bridge between the grassroots and elite politics in Northern Nigeria, Kwankwaso’s reputation now hangs in the balance amid growing backlash from within his own ranks.
As 2027 draws closer, Nigeria’s political landscape appears set for another dramatic realignment — and the question remains whether Kwankwaso will be at the center of it or left behind by the very movement he once led.
