The Nigerian Navy has arrested two suspects during separate security operations at a checkpoint in Awkuzu, Oyi Local Government Area of Anambra State.

The suspects include a man accused of impersonating a naval officer and another linked to alleged robbery.

In a statement, the Commanding Officer of the Onitsha Naval Outpost, Commander Kabir Yusuf, identified the suspects as 37-year-old Brooms Anthony from Akwa Ibom State and 36-year-old Christian Ogbole from Enugu State. Both men were arrested over the weekend and handed over to the Rapid Response Squad in Awkuzu for further investigation.

Anthony was stopped while travelling from Lagos to Enugu in a truck carrying household items. Naval personnel conducting a routine check found an identity card that allegedly presented him as a naval officer. When he could not provide satisfactory proof of his claim, he was arrested for suspected impersonation.

In a separate incident, personnel intercepted a minibus that was allegedly being used to transport stolen property. The operation followed a complaint from a trader whose shop had been burgled. The vehicle failed to stop when signalled and was pursued before Ogbole was arrested, while other occupants reportedly escaped.

Items recovered from the vehicle included solar equipment and other materials, some of which were later identified and returned to the trader.

The Navy said the operations form part of ongoing efforts, in collaboration with other security agencies, to combat crime and protect lives and property in Anambra State.
