Four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka has defended her striking fashion choices on the tennis court. She said she is ready to face criticism if it helps make things easier for athletes who come after her.

Osaka has drawn attention for her eye-catching outfits at the US Open.

In her first-round match, she appeared in a hooded white gown before revealing an all-black basketball-style kit underneath. She also wore braided hair and a headband as a tribute to former NBA star Allen Iverson, whom she described as a trailblazer in fashion.

For a later match against Elena Rybakina, which she eventually lost, Osaka arrived on court wearing a decorated coat. The Japanese star has become known for using her clothing to express her personality and interests beyond the game itself.

Responding to criticism on social media, Osaka said she does not mind being the first to try something new even if it attracts negative comments. She compared the reaction to the backlash she received in 2021 after speaking openly about her mental health struggles.

Osaka linked her bold self-expression to her Haitian heritage, saying it is part of who she is. She added that enduring criticism is worthwhile if it creates a freer path for future athletes to express their identities both on and off the court.
