The Enugu State Ministry of Transport has issued a seven-day ultimatum to roadside traders to stop trading along the Abakpa Nike axis of the state.

The directive forms part of efforts to ease traffic congestion and improve road safety.

State Commissioner for Transport Obi Ozor made the announcement in a statement. He said the ministry has intensified a public sensitisation campaign covering major corridors such as Ukwu Aki, Texaco, Nowas, T-Junction and Nkwo.

Drivers and tricycle riders were also educated on the dangers and penalties of driving against traffic. The commissioner warned that motorists caught driving the wrong way would have their vehicles impounded and be made to pay fines.

Ozor stressed that the current exercise is focused on awareness, but strict enforcement and prosecution of offenders will begin once the seven-day grace period expires. He urged traders, motorists and residents to cooperate with the state government.

The commissioner described one-way driving as a death trap and called on road users to keep to their lanes and keep the roads clear. The ministry said the measures are aimed at making the Abakpa area safer and more accessible for everyone.
