The Kwara State Government has officially launched a major housing initiative aimed at constructing 1,600 new residential units across all 16 Local Government Areas (LGAs).

Designed to tackle the state’s housing deficit, spur economic growth, and elevate social welfare, this project forms a cornerstone of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq’s broader infrastructure and poverty-reduction agenda.

Under the newly announced plan, each of Kwara’s 16 LGAs will receive 100 housing units tailored to local population dynamics and shelter demands. Major beneficiary hubs include Lafiagi, Offa, Erin-Ile, Babaloma, Patigi, and Kaiama, alongside targeted communities in Ilorin East, Ilorin South, and Ilorin West.

Furthermore, dedicated housing developments are slated for areas surrounding Kwara State University (KWASU) campuses to alleviate severe accommodation challenges for students and staff. The new estates will feature family-centric two-bedroom and three-bedroom layouts structured to remain affordable for average-income households.

According to the Commissioner for Housing and Urban Development, Dr. Segun Ogunsola, Kwara has also acquired the 132-unit Ogbondoroko Federal Housing Estate from the Federal Government to quickly scale up available shelter options.

Preparations are fully complete for an additional 250 housing units, with construction slated to begin within the current fiscal year.

To combat the rising costs of construction materials, the state administration is collaborating with the Federal Government to build the North Central Building Materials Development Hub in Kwara State. This facility will incentivize local manufacturing, curb dependence on costly imported supplies, and lower overall building expenses across the North-Central geopolitical zone.

Parallel to the LGA housing developments, the state government revealed that the **Kwara Smart City Project** has entered an advanced stage of execution. Built to accommodate roughly 540,000 residents, the Smart City represents one of the most ambitious urban developments in Kwara’s history, positioning the region for sustainable population expansion and modern economic growth for decades to come.
