The interim leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has met with former President Goodluck Jonathan in Abuja, days after a Federal High Court ruling dismissed a suit seeking recognition of the party’s interim National Working Committee.

The meeting, held behind closed doors at Jonathan’s residence in the Federal Capital Territory, was led by the chairman of the PDP Interim National Working Committee, Kabiru Turaki (SAN). Neither the party nor the former president disclosed details of the discussions.

However, party sources said the consultation focused on the implications of the recent court judgment and possible steps toward resolving the party’s prolonged leadership crisis.

The meeting followed the Federal High Court’s decision to strike out a suit filed by the PDP Board of Trustees, which sought an order compelling the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognise the Kabiru Turaki-led interim National Working Committee and update the commission’s records accordingly.

In its ruling, the court upheld the preliminary objections raised by INEC and other defendants, holding that the plaintiffs lacked the legal standing to institute the action and that the court lacked jurisdiction to hear the matter.

Justice Salim Ibrahim also ruled that the issues raised in the suit had already been addressed in earlier proceedings, noting that INEC had monitored the PDP convention that produced the leadership currently recognised by the electoral body.

A party source familiar with the meeting said the delegation briefed Jonathan on the outcome of the case and sought his views on the implications of the judgment and the party’s next steps.

The consultation comes as the opposition party continues efforts to address its internal leadership challenges and reposition itself ahead of future political activities.
