The Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council plans to equip truckers and freight forwarders with body cameras.

The move aims to gather clear evidence against officials involved in extortion along the Apapa and Tin-Can port corridors. This was announced by PEBEC Director-General Zahrah Audu during a press briefing in Abuja.

Audu explained that previous enforcement visits failed to produce arrests because officials were not caught in the act. Without video proof, prosecution became difficult. The body cameras will help document illegal demands and make it easier to take action against those involved.

The council has already placed clear signages at legal checkpoints with QR codes linked to a reporting portal. Truckers can use these to report issues quickly. The Nigerian Ports Authority is also working on a unified access system to reduce unauthorised entry and cut extortion opportunities.

PEBEC is targeting a reduction in cargo dwell time from 21 days to just seven days. This is part of broader efforts to make Nigerian ports more competitive with those in neighbouring countries. Officials say these steps will improve efficiency and attract more investment.

The initiative shows a strong commitment to tackling corruption in the logistics sector. With better evidence and faster reporting, authorities hope to create a cleaner business environment at the ports. Truckers are expected to receive training on how to use the new cameras effectively.
