NAFDAC Uncovers Illegal Lagos Bitters Factory, Arrests Manager Over Fake Registration Number
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has uncovered an illegal herbal product manufacturing facility in Agege, Lagos State, where three variants of Asheitu Adams Bitters were allegedly labelled with a registration number assigned to a cough syrup.
The agency announced the discovery in a statement posted on its official X account on Wednesday, following an October 10, 2026, report by The Guardian about herbal products allegedly carrying falsified NAFDAC registration numbers.
NAFDAC said its investigative team conducted surveillance before identifying the facility and discovering the herbal products bearing the questionable registration number.
According to the agency, the three variants of Asheitu Adams Bitters were labelled with registration number A7-1827L.
A verification exercise on NAFDAC’s National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control Automated Product Administration and Monitoring System (NAPAMS) portal revealed that the number was registered to Greentol Cough Syrup, indicating that it had allegedly been misused on the herbal products.
The agency disclosed that the company’s managing director and chief executive officer was not present during the operation, while its manager was arrested for further questioning.
“The company manager was arrested for further interrogation,” NAFDAC stated.
The agency called on Nigerians to provide credible information about suspected illegal manufacturing activities to support its enforcement efforts.
Members of the public can report such activities through the NAFDAC Call Centre on 0800-1-623322 or 0700-1-623322, or by email at reforms@nafdac.gov.ng.
The operation comes amid intensified efforts by the regulatory agency to combat the production and distribution of counterfeit and unregistered products across the country.
On October 14, NAFDAC reportedly seized counterfeit alcoholic beverages worth more than N2bn during an enforcement operation at the International Trade Fair Complex in Lagos.
The seizure followed another operation earlier in October at Ile-Epo Market, where the agency confiscated alcoholic beverages estimated to be worth N300m.
