The Enugu State Government has announced plans to flag off the distribution of free agricultural inputs to 63,000 registered smallholder farmers across its 260 political wards to support food production for the current farming season.

Following an Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Peter Mbah, Agriculture Commissioner Patrick Ubru revealed that the intervention includes free fertilizers, agrochemicals, and high-yield seeds for crops such as rice, maize, pepper, and tomatoes.

Building upon the 2025 program that reached 40,000 farmers, this expanded initiative aims to significantly lower production costs and boost rural livelihoods, with strict verification protocols ensuring that only fully mapped and registered smallholders receive the materials.

Beyond the agricultural drive, the state cabinet approved the recruitment of 4,698 additional teachers to staff Enugu’s 267 Smart Green Schools. To maintain high educational standards, the government is fully equipping the Centre for Experiential Learning and Innovation at the Enugu State College of Education (Technical) to train teachers in practical, skills-based instruction while helping local innovators commercialize creative solutions.

On the public health front, Health Commissioner Prof. George Ugwu announced the immediate reactivation of all COVID-19-era isolation facilities as a proactive defense against recent Ebola outbreaks in East Africa, leveraging Enugu’s position as an international transport gateway.

The administration also directed the accelerated completion of major health projects—including expansion works at the ESUT Teaching Hospital in Park Lane and SUMAS in Igbo-Eno—ahead of the upcoming commissioning of the Enugu International Hospital.
