Eight Dead, Nine Missing in Jigawa Boat Mishap
At least eight people have been confirmed dead and nine others missing after a wooden boat carrying approximately 40 passengers capsized in Malamawar-Yan Dutse, located within Ringim Local Government Area of Jigawa State.
The victims were mostly female farmers and labourers crossing the waterway on Sunday when the vessel capsized.
Providing an update on search operations, the Police Public Relations Officer for the Jigawa State Police Command, SP Shi’isu Adam, confirmed that emergency responders, local divers, and security personnel successfully rescued 23 survivors alive.
All rescued individuals received medical evaluation and treatment before being discharged to return to their families.
Eight bodies have been recovered from the river so far, while search and rescue teams continue combing the waterway and surrounding communities for the nine missing passengers. The police spokesperson reiterated appeals to boat operators to enforce safety standards, avoid overloading, and mandate the use of life jackets.
