Obanikoro Drops Governorship Ambition, Focuses on Mentoring Youth

Musiliu Obanikoro, a former minister of state for defence, has ruled out any future bid to become governor of Lagos State. In a recent interview, the veteran politician declared his governorship ambition “completely off the table.”

At 66 years old, he now wants to spend his time mentoring younger Nigerians and helping them prepare to take over leadership roles.

Obanikoro explained that the country’s family structures and value systems have weakened. He believes experienced leaders like himself should focus on guiding the next generation rather than chasing political office. He urged young people to stay calm and patient, reminding them that Nigeria ultimately belongs to them.

The former senator recalled his strong desire to govern Lagos back in 2007. He contested the election under the Peoples Democratic Party but lost to Babatunde Fashola.

Even though he once served under Bola Tinubu’s administration as a commissioner, Obanikoro said he had no regrets about running against that powerful political structure at the time.

He also shared his belief that he actually won the 2007 governorship race, though he acknowledged the realities of Nigerian politics. Today, Obanikoro is a member of the All Progressives Congress and recently took on the role of director-general for Obafemi Hamzat’s 2027 governorship campaign.

His decision marks a clear shift from active contesting to behind-the-scenes influence. Many see it as a mature step from a politician who has spent decades in public service. As Lagos prepares for future elections, Obanikoro’s new focus could inspire more leaders to invest in building capacity among the youth.
