Residents across several parts of Enugu State have been left without electricity following an explosion at an injection substation operated by the MainPower Electricity Distribution Company (MEDL).

The incident, which occurred around 7:30 p.m. on Friday at the Gariki Injection Substation, damaged an indoor 11kV breaker, disrupting power supply to numerous communities within the Enugu metropolis.

MEDL, the electricity distribution company responsible for power supply in Enugu State and a subsidiary of the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC), confirmed the development in a statement issued by its spokesperson, Emeka Ezeh.

Areas affected by the outage include Gariki Market, Mayor Market, Roban Stores along Agbani Road, Crunchies, the Mobile Police Barracks, Amechi Road, Upper Mount, Ikiriki, Emeka Ebila, Ozalla Street, Egbonnaji, Nnaji Ogbodo, Idaw River, Igbariam Street, Liberation, Mount, Umuchu, Achina, Vance, Unubi, Enugu Agidi, Amawbia, Amokwe, Kenneth, Amah, and Hill Crest.

According to the company, engineers have begun assessing the extent of the damage while restoration work is already underway to return electricity to the affected locations as quickly as possible.

MEDL apologised to customers for the disruption and appealed for understanding, assuring residents that every effort is being made to restore normal power supply in the shortest possible time.
