LASEMA Begins Controlled Demolition of Fire-Ravaged Commercial Building on Lagos Island
The Lagos State Government, through the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), has commenced the controlled demolition of a structurally compromised, fire-damaged commercial building located on Martins Street on Lagos Island.
The emergency operation was announced on Friday, July 17, 2026, by the Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu. He stated that the structural takedown follows a comprehensive integrity assessment of the property, which concluded that the building posed an immediate public safety hazard.
The demolition is being executed alongside the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) and a team of specialized safety contractors.
To prevent structural failure or injuries from falling debris, authorities have completely cordoned off the building and its immediate perimeter, declaring it a restricted zone. Consequently, all trading, vehicle parking, cargo loading, and commercial activities around the affected segment of Martins Street have been indefinitely suspended until the site is certified safe.
LASEMA has deployed security personnel—including operatives from the Nigeria Police Force, Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), and the Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Corps (LNSC)—to manage crowds and handle traffic diversions. Emergency responders from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) remain on standby at the site.
While acknowledging the economic disruption to the bustling Lagos Island business district, Dr. Oke-Osanyintolu emphasized that the precautionary clearance was strictly necessary to protect lives and property. He urged the public to stay clear of the barricades and comply with all safety directives throughout the exercise.
