Nigerian author and filmmaker, Onyeka Nwelue has opened up on how Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka helped him pay the outstanding bill for his knee surgery.

While celebrating Soyinka’s 92nd birthday, Nwelue recounted how the literary giant stepped in after learning about the financial challenge he was facing.

The surgery had cost around ₦39 million, leaving Nwelue with about ₦10 million still owed to the hospital.

According to Nwelue, when he informed Prof. Soyinka of the situation, the Nobel Laureate promised to assist and asked for the hospital’s bank details. Soyinka made the transfer and even followed up personally to confirm that the payment had been received successfully. Nwelue said he contacted the hospital and was relieved to learn that the full amount had been cleared.

Nwelue also remembered how Soyinka had previously supported his literary journey and assisted him in securing residency in Japan by acting as his guarantor. He described Soyinka as someone who remains very active despite his age, frequently using his iPhone, sending emails, and travelling.

The author expressed his deep gratitude for having such a supportive mentor in his life.
