Two Killed, Four Wounded in Toronto Street Gunfire Exchange
A shooting during the popular Salsa on St. Clair street festival in midtown Toronto has left two men dead and four other people seriously injured.
The gunfire broke out shortly after 8:00 p.m. near the intersection of St. Clair Avenue West and Arlington Avenue, triggering massive panic among the thousands of families and festival attendees who were celebrating the annual Latin American cultural event.
Witnesses described a chaotic scene as crowds suddenly began screaming, running for cover, and trampling over one another to escape the immediate area.
The Toronto Police Service initially issued a widespread active-shooter warning to the public, urging residents to completely avoid the neighborhood while heavily armed tactical units flooded the scene.
However, in a late-night news conference, Toronto Police Deputy Chief Frank Barredo clarified that the incident was not a random mass shooting but rather a direct exchange of gunfire between specific individuals who were actively targeting each other. Barredo stated that while the immediate area has since been secured, the gunmen indiscriminately put vast numbers of innocent bystanders in danger across three separate crime scenes.
Emergency responders located six victims suffering from gunshot wounds at the location, pronouncing two men dead at the scene while rushing the remaining four wounded survivors to regional hospitals in serious condition. Investigators have recovered two firearms from the area, though police officials acknowledged that they have not yet apprehended any suspects and are working to determine the exact number of shooters involved.
Political leaders have reacted with swift condemnation, with Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow expressing deep anger over the reckless violence in a family-filled venue, and Ontario Premier Doug Ford releasing a statement expressing devastation over the senseless loss of life.
