Ooni of Ife Refutes Chieftaincy Title Claims by Actor Baba Ijesha
The traditional ruler of Ile-Ife, Ooni Adeyeye Ogunwusi, has debunked allegations that he bestowed a traditional chieftaincy title upon the controversial Nollywood actor, Olanrewaju James, who is widely recognized as Baba Ijesha.
This official denial comes on the heels of social media posts by Baba Ijesha claiming that the prominent monarch had honored him with the title “Awada Konge Oduwa.” The actor made these assertions following a recent trip to the royal palace alongside his spouse, Abiodun Tokunbo, a fashion designer who runs Luminee Couture.
The actor’s initial announcement provoked widespread condemnation across the internet. Many social media users heavily criticized the monarch for seemingly celebrating and elevating an individual who had previously served a prison sentence for the sexual assault of a minor. Commentators questioned the message such an honor would send to the public.
Addressing the growing controversy, a statement released by the Ooni’s Director of Media and Public Affairs, Moses Olafare, clarified that the phrase “Awada Konge Oduwa” was never intended to be a formal traditional title. Instead, the palace explained that the monarch had merely used the expression as a humorous, lighthearted compliment to acknowledge the actor’s background in comedy during a casual conversation.
Furthermore, the palace emphasized that the process of awarding official chieftaincy titles in Ile-Ife is a deeply spiritual and structured tradition. It requires strict adherence to ancestral protocols, consultation with elders, and public traditional rituals—none of which occurred during Baba Ijesha’s stay at the palace.
While the chieftaincy claim was dismissed, the Ooni did confirm that he presented Baba Ijesha and his wife with cash gifts and a brand-new vehicle. The palace explained that these items were given out of royal benevolence and fatherly goodwill to celebrate the recent birth of the couple’s newborn child, King Kagar.
The statement wrapped up by noting that because the actor is an indigene of Ile-Ife, he remains eligible for a potential title sometime in the future. The monarch also appreciated Baba Ijesha for openly showing gratitude for the royal gifts. At this time, neither the actor nor his wife has issued a public response regarding the palace’s clarification.
