Akwa Ibom Gets Performance-based Funding for Excellence in Governance, Budget Transparency

The Akwa Ibom State Government has received performance-based funding under the State Action on Business Enabling Reforms (SABER) programme after emerging as one of Nigeria's top-performing states in governance, budget transparency, fiscal accountability, and institutional reforms.

The funding, supported by the World Bank through the Federal Government, is awarded to states that successfully implement key reforms aimed at improving the business environment, strengthening public financial management, and enhancing transparency in governance. Governor Umo Eno described the award as a significant milestone for his administration, saying it reflects the state's unwavering commitment to responsible governance, transparency, and sustainable development. According to the governor, the recognition is a testament to the dedication of public servants and stakeholders who have worked to implement reforms that improve service delivery, strengthen institutions, and create an enabling environment for investment and economic growth. The SABER programme incentivises Nigerian states to undertake reforms in critical areas, including budget transparency, land administration, investment promotion, public procurement, and regulatory efficiency. States that meet the programme's performance benchmarks qualify for performance-based financial support to sustain and expand reform efforts. Governor Eno reaffirmed his administration's commitment to consolidating the gains recorded under the programme, noting that the funds would be deployed to support development initiatives that improve the welfare of residents and stimulate economic activities across the state. He stressed that the state government would continue to prioritise accountability, prudent management of public resources, and policies that encourage private sector participation and job creation. Development experts have described the performance-based funding as a recognition of Akwa Ibom's progress in implementing governance reforms and improving fiscal transparency. They noted that such reforms are critical to attracting investment, strengthening public institutions, and promoting sustainable economic development. The latest achievement adds to Akwa Ibom's growing profile as one of the states pursuing governance reforms aimed at enhancing efficiency, transparency, and economic competitiveness under the World Bank-backed SABER programme.
