Ycee Raises the Alarm, Says Nigeria Now Rewarding Ignorance Over Education

Nigerian rapper, Oludemilade Martin, widely known as Ycee, has sparked a fresh national conversation after speaking out against what he describes as a dangerous shift in Nigeria’s social values, warning that the country is increasingly celebrating ignorance over intelligence and hard work.

Speaking during an appearance on the popular Afropolitan Podcast, the “Omo Alhaji” crooner expressed deep concern over what he coined the “Olodo uprising” a term referring to a growing culture that tolerates and even rewards mediocrity, particularly among Nigerian youths.

According to the rapper, Nigerian society has moved past the much-criticised “Yahoo culture” of internet fraud into an even more troubling phase he calls “Peller culture,” referencing the rise of social media influencers who gain massive followings not through skill or education, but through shallow and often senseless content.

“Nigerian society is no longer celebrating academic excellence. People don’t even want to go to school anymore. It’s not even Yahoo culture anymore; now we have a Peller culture,” Ycee stated. “This Olodo uprising we are witnessing is terrible. It feels like we are trying so hard to accommodate ignorance so people won’t feel bad, and now they seem to be the majority.”

The rapper further warned that this trend poses a serious long-term threat to younger generations, noting that the deliberate dumbing down of public discourse especially on social media is eroding Nigeria’s educational and sociocultural fabric. He described the development as alarming and called attention to the urgent need for Nigerians to return to valuing knowledge and academic achievement.

Ycee’s remarks have resonated widely online, with many Nigerians weighing in on the growing tension between traditional values of education and the new wave of social media fame that appears to require little to no intellectual effort.
