Court Sends Sowore to Kuje Prison over Revoked Bail
A Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday ordered the remand of the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, Omoyele Sowore, at the Kuje Correctional Centre pending the hearing of his application challenging the revocation of his bail.
Justice Mohammed Umar issued the order in a brief ruling after hearing arguments in the matter.
The court directed that Sowore remain in custody until it determines his motion seeking a stay of execution of the order that withdrew his bail and issued a warrant for his arrest.
Justice Umar also dismissed an earlier request by Sowore asking the judge to withdraw from the case over allegations of bias.
The matter was adjourned until Wednesday, June 24, for hearing of the application seeking to halt the enforcement of the bail revocation order and bench warrant.
Sowore’s new counsel, Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika, SAN, filed the application for a stay.
The AAC presidential candidate, who is also the publisher of Sahara Reporters, arrived at the court with supporters carrying placards.
The court had on June 16 revoked Sowore’s bail after he failed to appear for proceedings in the trial.
Following an oral application by the prosecution counsel, Akinkolu Kehinde, SAN, Justice Umar also issued a bench warrant for Sowore’s arrest.
The State Security Service is prosecuting Sowore over allegations that he made false statements against President Bola Tinubu in social media posts published on his X and Facebook accounts last year.
The prosecution alleged that Sowore referred to the President as “a criminal” in the posts.
