Zuru Bye-election Peaceful as Result Collation Begins
Voting in the Zuru State Constituency bye-election for the Kebbi State House of Assembly concluded peacefully on Saturday, with electoral officials commencing the collation of results from the 200 polling units in Zuru Local Government Area.
Party supporters, journalists, election observers and officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, gathered at designated collation centres as the process moved from voting to the announcement of results.
The exercise was generally peaceful across the local government area, although turnout was low in a number of polling units.
Security personnel were deployed to polling units, while INEC officials were on ground to conduct the election.
Earlier, commercial and social activities continued in parts of Zuru town as residents went about their normal businesses, with shops and markets remaining open while voting was underway.
An election stakeholder who monitored the process said the exercise was orderly and peaceful, adding that the low number of voters recorded in the early hours was not unusual.
He said rainfall did not prevent some residents from participating in the election, noting that voters who came out demonstrated commitment to the democratic process.
The stakeholder expressed optimism that participation would improve as the day progressed, though voting later ended with reports of low turnout in several polling centres.
Attention has now shifted to the collation centres, where results from the polling units are expected to be received, verified and announced by electoral officials.
