FG Releases Guidelines for Smooth Implementation of New Tax Laws

The Federal Government has released important guidelines to help with the rollout of the new Tax Acts 2025.

These rules explain how taxpayers, tax offices, and other groups should handle the change from the old tax system to the new one that started on January 1, 2026. The move aims to make the transition clear and avoid confusion for everyone involved.

Finance Minister Taiwo Oyedele explained that the guidelines cover issues like old tax debts, audits, disputes, and returns that cross over the two periods. Tax matters from before 2026 will still follow the old laws, while new ones will use the updated rules.

This includes how to handle income taxes, incentives, and record-keeping across both systems.

The new Tax Acts include laws setting up the Nigeria Revenue Service and improving tax administration across the country. According to the guidelines, existing tax breaks and exemptions will continue until they expire, but fresh requests will follow the new rules. The focus is on making sure the changes are fair and not applied backwards.

Oyedele described the guidelines as a key part of Nigeria’s tax reforms. He said they are built on principles of clarity, fairness, and certainty to help build trust in the system. The rules will apply to federal, state, and local tax bodies for consistent enforcement nationwide.

This step by the government is expected to support economic growth by creating a more modern and transparent tax environment. Many hope it will encourage people and businesses to pay taxes willingly and improve the country’s investment appeal.

As implementation continues, the guidelines should help reduce problems and promote better revenue collection for national development.
