Moscow was hit by what authorities described as the largest Ukrainian drone attack on the Russian capital marking a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict.

Russian officials said nearly 200 Ukrainian drones targeted Moscow and surrounding regions in a coordinated overnight operation.

The attack triggered explosions, fires, and widespread disruptions across the capital, with air defense systems activated to intercept incoming drones.

Moscow Mayor, Sergei Sobyanin stated that Russian air defense forces shot down many of the drones before they reached their intended targets.

However, several drones reportedly penetrated the city’s defenses, causing damage to infrastructure and industrial facilities.

Among the key targets was the Kapotnya oil refinery in southeastern Moscow, one of the city's major fuel supply facilities.

Reports indicated that explosions and fires were recorded at the site following the attack, while emergency services were deployed to contain the damage.

The drone assault also forced the temporary suspension of operations at several Moscow airports, including Sheremetyevo International Airport, leading to flight delays and cancellations.

Authorities said emergency response teams were dispatched to affected areas as damage assessments continued.

Officials in the Moscow region reported multiple injuries resulting from the attack, with residential and commercial buildings also sustaining damage from drone debris and explosions.

Ukraine has not released detailed operational information about the strike, but President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has previously defended long-range attacks on Russian territory as a response to continued Russian missile and drone strikes on Ukrainian cities and critical infrastructure.

The latest attack comes amid an intensification of drone warfare between Russia and Ukraine. In recent months, Kyiv has expanded its ability to conduct deep strikes inside Russian territory, targeting military installations, oil facilities, and logistics hubs, while Russia continues to launch large-scale aerial attacks against Ukrainian cities.

Military analysts say the scale of the Moscow operation demonstrates Ukraine's growing long-range strike capabilities and highlights the increasing vulnerability of strategic targets deep inside Russia.

As the war enters another year with no immediate prospect of a negotiated settlement, the attack is expected to further heighten tensions between the two countries and could prompt additional military responses from Moscow.
