Troops, Vigilantes Foil Terrorist Attack in Yobe

Security forces, supported by local vigilante operatives, have successfully thwarted an attempted terrorist attack in Kanama, a community in Geidam Local Government Area of Yobe State.

Sources disclosed that the operation was carried out in the early hours of June 15 after intelligence reports indicated the movement of suspected fighters linked to the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) and Jama’atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda’awati wal-Jihad (JAS) within the area.

Acting on the information, troops from the Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Kanama, alongside vigilante personnel, launched a joint patrol to intercept the suspected insurgents.

The patrol team reportedly encountered the terrorists at about 3:15 a.m., triggering a gun battle between both sides.

Under sustained pressure from the combined security team, the insurgents were forced to abandon their position and retreat towards the Sambisa forest axis.

Following the encounter, security operatives recovered several items believed to have been left behind by the fleeing suspects. The recovered materials included nine bicycles, a Baofeng communication radio, a mobile phone, three pairs of slippers and three locally fabricated water containers.

A member of the vigilante group sustained gunshot injuries during the exchange of fire and was immediately evacuated to a medical facility for treatment.

The recovered items have since been secured for further analysis and investigation by relevant authorities.

Military sources stated that troops remain on high alert and are continuing offensive and surveillance operations aimed at restricting the movement and activities of terrorist groups across the North-East region.
