AFC Backs Dangote Fertiliser Expansion with $600 Million Facility
The Africa Finance Corporation (AFC) has provided a $600 million financing facility to support the expansion of Dangote Fertiliser, deepening its partnership with the Dangote Group and reinforcing efforts to enhance food security across Africa.
The funding is part of a broader $7 billion expansion programme designed to significantly increase fertiliser production capacity in Nigeria and other parts of the continent. The facility was extended to GreenView Fertilizer Corporation, the holding company for Dangote Fertilizer, to support the next phase of the company's growth strategy.
Under the expansion plan, Dangote Fertilizer aims to triple its annual production capacity in Nigeria from 3 million metric tonnes to 9 million metric tonnes.
The programme also includes the development of a new fertiliser manufacturing plant in Ethiopia, which is expected to produce an additional 3 million metric tonnes of urea annually. The investment is expected to strengthen agricultural productivity across Africa by ensuring a more reliable supply of fertiliser to farmers while reducing the continent's dependence on imported agricultural inputs.
President and Chief Executive of Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, described the project as a major step toward achieving food security and industrial development across Africa.
He noted that the expansion would not only support local farmers but also position Africa as a major player in the global fertiliser market. Dangote said the expanded operations are projected to generate more than $4 billion annually in export revenue within the next three years, contributing significantly to foreign exchange earnings and economic growth.
AFC said the financing aligns with its mission of supporting transformative projects that drive industrialisation, regional trade, and sustainable economic development across the continent.
Industry experts believe the expansion will help address persistent fertiliser shortages in many African countries, improve crop yields, and support governments' efforts to boost food production amid growing concerns over food security.
The latest financing arrangement further strengthens the long-standing relationship between AFC and the Dangote Group, which have collaborated on several strategic infrastructure and industrial projects over the years.
With the expansion underway, Dangote Fertilizer is expected to play a central role in transforming Africa's agricultural sector, creating jobs, increasing exports, and supporting the continent's quest for greater self-sufficiency in food production.
