Diallo Strikes Late as Ivory Coast Stun Ecuador in World Cup Opener
Ivory Coast began their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign in dramatic fashion, with Amad Diallo’s stoppage-time strike securing a 1-0 win over Ecuador in their Group E opener at Philadelphia Stadium on Sunday.
Diallo, who entered as a substitute in the 56th minute, broke the deadlock in the 90th minute with a clinical left-footed shot from just inside the penalty area that beat diving goalkeeper, Hernan Galindez, sparking wild celebrations among the Ivorian contingent inside the stadium.
For long stretches, it looked as though Ecuador would be the side celebrating. Ivory Coast were stunned by a front-footed Ecuadorian side in the first half, with the South Americans hitting the crossbar twice and Enner Valencia squandering a glorious chance, blazing over the bar after a cross from Piero Hincapie. The teams combined to rattle the woodwork three times in total before Diallo’s eventual breakthrough, with Elye Wahi also striking the bar for the Elephants early in the second half.
The introduction of Diallo alongside Ange-Yoan Bonny proved to be the turning point. Both came on in the 56th minute, with Diallo shifting to the right wing as Yan Diomande moved to the left, while Bonny’s hold-up play and ability to turn and drive forward added a new dimension that the side had lacked from their starting striker.
The winner itself came on the counter, as a bulldozing run down the right flank from centre-back Wilfried Singo opened up the Ecuadorian defence, with Singo squaring the ball for Diallo to finish first time.
Ecuador were not without late chances of their own, with goalkeeper Yahia Fofana called upon to keep the scoreline level before Diallo’s intervention.
Ecuador’s best opportunity after the break came in the 68th minute, when Gonzalo Plata’s powerful effort from around 25 yards was parried away by Fofana. The result was made all the more striking given the atmosphere inside the venue, where a capacity crowd of 68,274, the vast majority clad in Ecuador’s yellow shirts, made it feel like a virtual home fixture for La Tri.
The victory carries significant historical weight for Ivorian football. It marked Ivory Coast’s fourth win in World Cup history and only their second in an opening match, following a 2-1 victory over Japan at Brazil 2014. The result also lifts the Elephants into a strong early position in the group, as Germany now lead Group E with three points and a plus-six goal difference, with Ivory Coast level on points but a plus-one difference, while Ecuador and Curacao both sit on zero.
For Diallo, the late winner extends a remarkable run of clutch contributions for his country. It marked his second decisive goal in as many friendlies in the lead-up to the tournament, having also struck a late winner in a 2-1 victory over France just ten days earlier on June 4. Both Ivory Coast and Ecuador will look to bounce back or build on this result when they take on Curaçao in their next Group E fixture, with Ecuador in particular needing a strong response to revive their campaign.
