Barau Sponsors 42 Bills in Three Years as Senate Marks Third Anniversary

Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, has emerged as one of the most active lawmakers in the 10th National Assembly, sponsoring 42 bills within three years, according to official Senate records.

The legislative record, covering the period from June 13, 2023, to June 13, 2026, shows sustained activity across key sectors, including governance, education, healthcare, economic development, energy, the digital economy, and constitutional reform. Five of the bills have already been enacted into law.

The milestone coincides with the third anniversary of the 10th National Assembly, which was inaugurated on June 13, 2023, following a proclamation by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Details of the legislative achievements were contained in a statement issued on Friday by Ismail Mudashir, Special Adviser to the Deputy President of the Senate on Media and Publicity.

According to the statement, the volume of bills sponsored by Barau reflects consistent legislative engagement and a commitment to policy development as the Senate approaches the midpoint of its four-year tenure.

Data published in The Parliamentarian Magazine, a publication of the Deputy Senate President’s media office, indicated that Barau, who represents the Kano North Senatorial District, maintained a steady pace of legislative sponsorship throughout the three-year period, reinforcing his standing as one of the leading contributors to lawmaking in the upper legislative chamber.

The statement described the feat as a significant accomplishment, noting that the senator had combined his legislative responsibilities with leadership duties in both the Senate and the regional parliament.

“Sponsoring forty-two bills in three years is a remarkable legislative achievement. Senator Barau has consistently demonstrated a high level of commitment and productivity in public service,” the statement said.

It further noted that Barau has continued to support the leadership of the Senate while also serving as First Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, where he plays a key role in advancing the work of the regional legislature.

A breakdown of the legislative record shows that Barau sponsored 13 bills in 2023, nine in 2024, 17 in 2025 and three in 2026.

Among the bills that have successfully passed into law are the North West Development Commission Bill, the National Identity Management Commission (Repeal and Re-Enactment) Bill, the Agricultural Research Council Amendment Bill, the Federal Medical Centre, Gwarzo Establishment Bill, and the Federal University of Science and Technology, Kabo Establishment Bill.

The statement concluded that the deputy senate president’s legislative record demonstrates sustained policy engagement and institutional productivity, underscoring his contribution to the work of the 10th National Assembly over the past three years.
