Enugu Governor Hails Security Forces as Major ESN Arms Cache is Seized

Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has praised the country’s joint security forces following the discovery and seizure of a substantial cache of weapons belonging to the Eastern Security Network (ESN), the armed wing of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

The operation, a coordinated effort between the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigerian Army’s 82 Division, and the Nigeria Police Force, took place on June 9, 2026. Acting on intelligence gathered from previously arrested suspects, security operatives raided a hideout in the Gariki area, where the weapons were cleverly concealed inside a facility disguised as a piggery. A subsequent operation in the Agbani area led to the recovery of even more military-grade hardware.

Governor Mbah inspected the recovered items at the DSS headquarters in Enugu on Friday. The haul was described as one of the most significant in recent months, including a rocket launcher, two RPG warheads, and three RPG chargers. The security forces also recovered 11 AK-47 rifles, several General Purpose Machine Guns (GPMGs), and more than 610 rounds of 7.62mm NATO ammunition.

Other items seized included hand grenades, tear gas cartridges, and uniforms belonging to the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), complete with lanyards, as well as IPOB regalia. The governor stated that the recovered weapons were intended to be used to wreak havoc across the South and create a false narrative of insecurity. He commended the inter-agency collaboration that led to the raid, noting that the successful operation prevented a significant threat to public safety.
