SSANU Warns FG Over Delay in Renegotiating 2009 Agreement
The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities has warned that its members are growing increasingly agitated over the delay in concluding the 2009 agreement renegotiation with the Federal Government.
National Vice President, Dr Abdussobour Salaam spoke at a meeting at Olabisi Onabanjo University in Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State.
The renegotiation is chaired by former Head of Service Alhaji Yayale Ahmed and is nearly complete. Salaam thanked President Bola Tinubu for keeping the negotiation platform alive.
He noted that reviews were due every three years, meaning in 2012, 2015, 2018, and 2021, but successive governments failed to act.
Salaam urged Tinubu not to allow outside parties to frustrate the final stages. He warned that members are becoming highly restive and agitated. The union had already suspended a previous strike to allow dialogue, but patience is running out.
Despite the frustration, Salaam said SSANU remains committed to peaceful engagement. He also called on the government to ease the hardship from subsidy removal and rising costs. He warned that the cost of living is at its highest level.
Salaam also renewed calls for better career progression to the CONTISS 15 salary grade. He praised OOU’s management for creating that opportunity. Vice-Chancellor Prof Ayodeji Agboola hailed SSANU’s support, while branch chairman Dr Abiodun Lamina listed challenges like personnel shortages that still need attention.
