Tinubu Says Era of Abandoned Infrastructure Projects Over
President Bola Tinubu has declared that his administration has broken with the long-standing practice of public infrastructure projects being delayed for years through repeated budget allocations and unfinished implementation.
The President made the remark on Wednesday during the commissioning of the completed Arterial Road N5, also known as Obafemi Awolowo Way, which links Life Camp Junction to Ring Road III in Abuja’s Dape District.
Tinubu, who was represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima at the event, said infrastructure development remains a key indicator of national progress and reiterated his administration’s commitment to building a capital city that reflects Nigeria’s population growth, economic ambitions and national identity.
According to a statement issued by the Senior Special Assistant to the Vice President on Media and Communication, Stanley Nkwocha, the President said the newly completed road project demonstrated the government’s resolve to complete projects within set timelines.
He noted that the road, which was awarded to Julius Berger and flagged off in October 2024 with a 15-month completion schedule, was conceived, financed and delivered under the current administration.
Tinubu said previous administrations often allowed major projects to remain on government budgets for years without completion, but insisted that such practices were no longer acceptable.
He added that his government had maintained steady progress on inherited road projects, stressing that construction and rehabilitation efforts had continued without interruption.
The President said the completion of the N5 corridor would improve movement between Dape, Karmo, Gwarinpa I, Kado, Idu and Mbora, while also enhancing access to the Idu Industrial District.
He observed that Life Camp Junction had long been one of Abuja’s major traffic congestion points, creating delays and economic losses for commuters and businesses.
According to him, the new corridor aligns with the connectivity goals outlined in the Abuja Master Plan and is expected to reduce transportation and logistics costs, attract investment and support employment opportunities.
Tinubu also commended the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, for overseeing the execution of infrastructure projects across the capital city.
He urged residents and businesses to fulfil their tax and land-related obligations to enable the FCT Administration to fund additional projects, while calling on community leaders and residents to safeguard public infrastructure against vandalism.
Speaking at the event, the Minister of State for the FCT, Mariya Mahmud, praised the President’s commitment to infrastructure development and acknowledged Vice President Kashim Shettima’s support for projects within the territory.
Wike, on his part, said the scale of development being witnessed in satellite towns and communities under the current administration represented one of the clearest demonstrations of the Renewed Hope Agenda in the FCT.
Also speaking, the Executive Secretary of the Federal Capital Development Administration, Richard Dauda, said the road commissioning added to the list of completed projects under the administration and would significantly improve connectivity and transportation infrastructure across adjoining communities in the Federal Capital Territory.
