FG Plans Mobile Police Unit, Barracks in Jigawa to Curb Farmer-Herder Clashes

In a bid to strengthen internal security and address persistent farmer-herder clashes in northern Nigeria, the Federal Government has announced plans to establish a Mobile Police (Anti-Riot) unit and build 20 blocks of police barracks in Guri Local Government Area of Jigawa State.
The announcement was made by Senator Abdulhamid Ahmed, who represents the Jigawa Northeast Senatorial District, during the Jigawa State Government Citizen Engagement Programme (JSGCEP) held in Guri town over the weekend.
According to the senator, the initiative is a collaborative effort between the federal government and the Jigawa State Government, aimed at restoring peace and boosting development in the region.
As part of the security project, a standard one-storey police station equipped with modern surveillance and communication systems will also be constructed in Guri. The security infrastructure is expected to bolster law enforcement presence and prevent the recurrence of violent conflicts that have plagued the region.
“This project is necessary for maintaining law and order, especially given the recurring land disputes between indigenous farmers and Fulani herders,” Senator Ahmed stated.
“Our goal is to bring lasting peace and ensure the safety of our people while promoting agricultural productivity in this fertile region.”
Guri is recognized for its vast agricultural potential, enjoying two irrigation seasons and one rainy season, making it a magnet for herders and farmers alike.
However, competition for land use between both groups has led to frequent clashes, prompting the need for enhanced security measures.
In addition to the security initiative, Senator Ahmed revealed that construction of a modern stadium in Guri town will commence on May 9, 2025.
The stadium will be equipped with digital visual screens and advanced broadcasting facilities, enabling residents to watch both national and international football matches.
The project is intended to promote sports, recreation, and social cohesion among the youth and elderly.
The senator also highlighted his contributions to youth empowerment in the region.
Over 40 young people from Guri have reportedly secured employment in federal institutions, including the Nigeria Police Force, Armed Forces, Nigeria Immigration Service, and Nigeria Customs Service.
In his closing remarks, Senator Ahmed urged the residents of Guri to remain peaceful and support the All Progressives Congress (APC), President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Governor Malam Umar Namadi, and himself in the 2027 general elections.
He emphasized that continued political support would pave the way for more developmental projects in the region.
The new mobile police unit and barracks are expected to become operational before the end of 2025, pending completion of construction and deployment of personnel.
