Peter Obi Threatens N5bn Defamation Suit Against Kenneth Okonkwo, Demands Retraction
Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has issued a legal demand to actor-turned-politician, Kenneth Okonkwo, seeking the retraction of allegations made against him during a television interview and demanding N5 billion in damages.
According to details contained in a letter dated June 9, 2026, Obi’s legal team accused Okonkwo of making false, malicious and defamatory statements concerning the former Anambra State governor during an appearance on Channels Television.
The lawyers alleged that Okonkwo falsely claimed that Obi and leaders of the South-East chapter of the National Democratic Coalition (NDC) demanded N10 million bribes from aspirants, handpicked candidates from a hotel room, collected money from Nigerians in the diaspora and engaged in criminal activities.
Obi’s legal team argued that the allegations portrayed their client as a fraudster, bribe collector, scammer and participant in criminal conspiracy, insisting that the claims were false and unsupported by evidence.
As part of the demands outlined in the letter, Obi is seeking an immediate retraction of the statements, a public apology to be published across all platforms where the allegations were circulated, and N5 billion as compensation for alleged reputational damage.
The letter reportedly gave Okonkwo seven days to comply with the demands, warning that failure to do so could result in legal proceedings.
According to the letter, the proposed legal action may include claims for damages, injunctions, public retractions and the recovery of litigation costs.
As of the time of filing this report, Okonkwo had not publicly responded to the legal demand.
The development marks the latest twist in the ongoing political disagreements involving prominent figures within the Labour Party movement ahead of future political activities in the country.
