House of Representatives Urges Tinubu to Intensify Offensive Against Bandits, Kidnappers

The House of Representatives has called on President to immediately implement a comprehensive and aggressive security strategy to dismantle bandit and kidnapper networks across the country amid growing concerns over worsening insecurity.

The resolution followed the adoption of a motion of urgent public importance sponsored by during plenary on Tuesday.

Presenting the motion, Osonwa expressed concern over the increasing incidents of banditry, kidnappings and attacks on schools, communities and places of worship, warning that the situation continues to threaten public safety and national stability.

The lawmaker reminded the Federal Government of its constitutional responsibility to safeguard the lives and welfare of citizens, citing provisions of the 1999 Constitution that designate security and public welfare as the primary purpose of government.

He lamented the growing trend of school abductions across several parts of the country, noting that insecurity has disrupted education and worsened the challenge of out-of-school children.

According to him, many families remain traumatised by the abduction and prolonged captivity of loved ones, while fear of attacks has forced thousands of children out of classrooms.

Osonwa also raised concerns over the increasing targeting of schools and places of worship by criminal groups, describing the development as a threat to citizens’ rights and freedom to practice their faith without fear.

The lawmaker further highlighted the economic impact of insecurity, saying many businesses have shut down, farming activities have been disrupted and families have been pushed into hardship due to ransom payments and loss of livelihoods.

He questioned the effectiveness of the nation’s security architecture despite substantial government spending on defence and security, arguing that current efforts appear insufficient to decisively curb the activities of criminal groups.

Following deliberations, the House strongly condemned the continued attacks on schools, religious centres and communities across the country and resolved to transmit an urgent appeal to President Tinubu as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces.

The lawmakers specifically called for the immediate deployment of a sustained and coordinated security offensive aimed at dismantling criminal strongholds, securing vulnerable institutions and ensuring the safe release of citizens held captive by kidnappers and bandits.

In its resolutions, the House warned that if the security situation fails to improve within a reasonable timeframe, the nation’s service chiefs should consider resigning honourably for failing to meet the constitutional obligation of protecting lives and property.

The House also directed its Committees on Defence, National Security and Intelligence, and Army to intensify oversight of the implementation of the resolutions and report back within two weeks for further legislative action.

Nigeria continues to grapple with multiple security challenges, including banditry, terrorism, kidnapping for ransom and communal violence, particularly in parts of the North-West, North-Central and North-East regions. Repeated attacks on schools and mass abductions in recent years have fueled calls for stronger and more proactive security measures nationwide.
