Abducted Oyo Teacher Appears in New Video, Disputes Reported Demands of Captors
One of the teachers abducted alongside dozens of pupils in Oyo State has appeared in a new video circulating on social media, disputing widely reported claims about the demands allegedly made by their captors.
In the video, the teacher, who appeared to be speaking from captivity, appealed to the government and Nigerians to intervene in efforts to secure their release, insisting that some of the demands previously attributed to the abductors were false.
According to her, the captors recently showed the victims copies of newspaper reports containing claims that they were demanding the entrenchment of Sharia law in Oyo State, the payment of N1 billion ransom, and other conditions for their release.
The teacher, however, alleged that the abductors rejected those reports and maintained that they were not demanding money, weapons, or the implementation of Sharia law in the state.
She claimed that the only demand repeatedly communicated by the captors was the release of some of their associates who had been arrested by security agencies.
The teacher also stated that neither she nor the other abducted victims had been forced to adopt Islamic religious practices during their captivity.
According to her, the captors had allowed them to continue practicing their faith without coercion.
In an emotional appeal, she urged authorities not to politicise the situation and called on well-meaning Nigerians to assist in efforts aimed at securing the freedom of the abducted pupils and teachers.
“Nigerians our lives are in your hands,” she said in the video.
The latest footage comes weeks after another video surfaced showing the same abducted teacher appealing to the government to negotiate with the bandits and meet their demands to facilitate the release of the victims.
The abduction, which occurred about 24 days ago, involved dozens of pupils and teachers and has continued to generate concern among residents, parents and stakeholders in the education sector.
As of the time of filing this report, security agencies and the Oyo State Government had not issued an official response to the claims made in the latest video.
