Eriksen Collapses Again, Denmark vs Ukraine Friendly Abandoned
Denmark and Ukraine’s international friendly match in Odense has been dramatically abandoned after Christian Eriksen collapsed on the pitch in the 68th minute, sending shockwaves through the football world and reviving haunting memories of the midfielder’s near-fatal cardiac arrest at Euro 2020.
Eriksen, who started the game for Denmark, suddenly went down holding his chest in a deeply alarming scene that immediately brought the match to a halt. Players from both sides quickly gathered around the stricken midfielder as medical staff rushed onto the pitch to attend to him. The match was swiftly suspended and subsequently called off altogether, with around 30 minutes of the second half remaining at the time of the incident. Denmark had been leading 2-1 when the emergency unfolded.
In an encouraging early update, Denmark’s national team confirmed in an official statement that Eriksen was conscious following the incident. Reports also indicated that the Wolfsburg midfielder walked onto the ambulance on his own two feet to a standing ovation from the crowd inside the stadium a scene that offered some relief to the thousands of fans watching on with deep anxiety. The Danish Football Federation stated that Eriksen was “conscious and feeling well according to the circumstances,” though further medical assessment is expected.
The incident inevitably draws comparisons to one of the most terrifying moments in recent football history Eriksen’s cardiac arrest during Denmark’s opening Euro 2020 fixture against Finland in June 2021, when he collapsed and required CPR on the pitch before being resuscitated. He subsequently had an Implantable Cardioverter-Defibrillator fitted and mounted one of sport’s most remarkable comebacks, going on to sign for Manchester United in 2022 before joining Bundesliga side Wolfsburg following his release in 2025.
Sunday’s match, which had been a World Cup warm-up friendly for the Danes, had earlier produced a stunning opener from Manchester United’s Patrick Dorgu before Denmark moved into a 2-1 lead. All of that, however, was rendered irrelevant as the football world held its breath once more for one of the game’s most beloved figures.
