Pressure Mounts on Tinubu to Reinstate Fubara

Bola Tinubu is facing mounting pressure to reinstate Siminialayi Fubara as the Governor of Rivers State on May 29, amidst the ongoing controversy surrounding the state’s gubernatorial election.

Sources close to the presidency have revealed that Tinubu is being urged by various stakeholders, including some members of his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), to consider stopping state of emergency in Rivers State and reinstating Fubara as governor.

The call for Tinubu to intervene in the Rivers State crisis comes after the Supreme Court’s decision to sack Fubara as governor and replace him with Tonye Cole of the APC. However, the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has vowed to challenge the verdict, citing alleged irregularities and electoral malpractices.

With the May 29 inauguration date fast approaching, Tinubu is under pressure to find a solution to the crisis, which has sparked tensions and protests in Rivers State. Some of his allies are advising him to declare a state of emergency in the state, which would allow him to suspend the democratic process and appoint an administrator to oversee the state until a new election can be held.

Others are urging Tinubu to reinstate Fubara as governor, pending the outcome of the PDP’s appeal at the Supreme Court. This move would be seen as a way of calming tensions and avoiding further instability in the state.

However, the APC and its supporters are opposed to the idea of reinstating Fubara, arguing that the Supreme Court’s decision is final and binding. They claim that any attempt to reverse the verdict would be seen as an attempt to undermine the rule of law and the independence of the judiciary.

As the pressure mounts on Tinubu to act, the president-elect is facing a difficult decision that could have far-reaching implications for the country. With the international community watching, Tinubu must balance the need to maintain stability and order in Rivers State with the need to uphold the rule of law and respect the democratic process.

In a statement, the PDP urged Tinubu to “do the right thing” and reinstate Fubara as governor. “The people of Rivers State have spoken, and their voices must be respected,” the party said. “We will not accept any attempt to impose a state of emergency or suspend the democratic process in Rivers State.”

The APC, on the other hand, accused the PDP of trying to “blackmail” Tinubu into reversing the Supreme Court’s decision. “The rule of law must be respected, and the Supreme Court’s verdict must be upheld,” the party said.

As the clock ticks down to May 29, all eyes are on Tinubu, who must navigate this complex and sensitive situation to find a solution that will satisfy all parties and maintain stability in Rivers State.
